Polls stated that people think more favorably of Red China than they do of the United States. If given the choice, they would prefer to live in the US, but they like China better. Ron Kuby of WABC Radio in NYC stated several reasons why people might not view the US favorably, including several military actions taken around the world, and so China has obviously done more to make the world a better place than the US. Too bad he didn't mention the atrocities that the Chinese government imposes upon its own people, the lack of freedom of religion (no matter when their government may say), and egrigious caste system that still prevails within its borders. One caller stated how wonderful and kind the people of China are ... a statement that I'm not refuting, but you can't say China is nice because the people are so kind and wonderful and state that you don't like the US because of its policies.
On another note, you can't separate the freedoms that we are afforded in this country from our role in the rest of the world. We don't have our freedoms because we asked for them nicely - we have them because people believed in them strongly enough to fight, and die, for them. Look at the rest of the world, the freedoms that this country enjoys are not the norm and there are people whose entire goal is to take them away from us. Sitting around and closing ourselves off from the rest of the world is not the answer. People risk their lives to come to this country because there's hope here . . . that hope is because the people of this country know that our freedoms mean something and are worth fighting for. May instead of bashing our policies, the people of other countries should muster up some courage and make those freedoms a reality around the world. It won't be easy and it might cost you something -- but it's obviously worth it.
