Deep Throat - hero or coward?

How is it that someone who could betray his administration and his job, and lie to not only his loved ones, but the country is considered a hero. If he had been a hero then he would have had the courage to stand up to the adminsitration publically and made a difference then, not sat back while others made sacrifices that he wasn't willing to make. If he was a hero, then he would have had the courage to state that he was the informant and pay the consequences. It might even be argued that after all these years, if he truly was a hero then his deciding factor for finally telling the truth wouldn't have been profit. According to the Vanity Fair article, money was the motivation that his children used to have him tell his story.

I'm certainly not claiming that this man doesn't have a rightful place in history or even the right to tell his story and gain closure before he dies. I just think that we have glorified "Deep Throat" over the years and now will glorify Mark Felt, forgetting the facts and focusing on the story that has been glamorized for us.

We have true heroes, men and women who stand up for what is right and what they believe in every day. Men and women who make choices each day that may carry consequences or create difficult circumstances, and they don't shy away from them. These are the heroes that we should look to -- not ones who subvert the process and then get a large paycheck in the end.
